Roofs to Roads makes sense for environment
Successful recycling is about finding markets for old material, to reuse it and keep it out of landfills.

In Boulder County, the latest material targeted for reuse is asphalt shingles, through a new program called Roofs to Roads, which will use the material from recycled shingles in hot mix asphalt used to pave roads.

WhatÕs not to like about a program that could keep thousands of tons of shingles from getting buried in landfills, save thousands of dollars in road paving costs and reduce CO2 emissions?

Nothing.

Boulder-based 3R Roofing partnered with Boulder County and Asphalt Specialties in Erie to kick off the Roofs to Roads project, with a $60,000 grant from the Colorado Department of Public Health and EnvironmentÕs Alternative Technology Program.

Congratulations to David Coddington, owner of 3R Roofing and now director of Roofs to Roads, for pushing the concept.

Coddington has been working for several years to finds ways to recycle roofing materials and working with clients to make their roofing choices more environmentally responsible. Roofs to Roads is one result of that work.

We also applaud Gary Stilmunkes, owner of Asphalt Specialties, for investing in the equipment to chop up shingles for recycling.

Asphalt Specialties will pave a two-mile section of North 63rd Street this summer, and the Colorado Department of Transportation will monitor the project and the section of the road for performance. If the pavement holds up well, it could set the standard for using recycled materials in road asphalt.

We encourage roofers and general contractors to get involved with the project. Roofs to Roads has scheduled a seminar to provide an overview of the project and explain benefits to participants.

The seminar is set for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 16, at the Boulder County Resource Conservation Division office, 1901 63rd St., Boulder.

Roofers and contractors also can get more information by leaving a message for Coddington at 720-333-7416 or visiting www.roofs2roadscolorado.org.
